Our Sid Cooke Dolls' Houses are high-quality
dolls' houses and shops that stand out from the rest. The
main difference is in the detail. Dolls houses have been
providing enjoyment and a degree of domestic education for
the young for many generations. 17th Century dolls houses,
or "baby houses" as they were also called, were
often replicas of wealthy family homes, built to provide
an historical record of the times. Early dolls houses were
also made by well-to-do women in Germany and Holland as
part of their study of contemporary fashion and design.
During the 18th Century cabinet houses made their first
appearance. These were dolls houses built into the interior
of an attractive cabinet. The doll cabinet of Sara Ploos
van Amstel, dating back to 1745, is a classic example. Dolls
houses became more popular in the late Victorian period,
finding their new home in the children's nurseries. The
most famous dolls house is probably the Queen Mary dolls
house which is on permanent display at Windsor Castle. Sir
Edward Lutyens, a successful architect of the time, received
a Royal Commission to build what he interpreted as "something
which will enable future generations to see how a King and
Queen lived in the twentieth century, and what authors,
artists and craftsmen of note there were". Constructed during
the years 1921 to 1924 on a scale of 1:12, the house had
everything imaginable, from electricity and running water
to a working lift. The library
contains a miniature 500-word book written specially by
Arthur Conan Doyle and many
famous establishments of the time also made contributions
(on 1:12 scale of course), such as Singer (sewing machines),
Veuve Clicquot and Mumm (champagne), Cartier (clocks), Doulton
(china) and even Rolls Royce and Daimler. Here we present
a range of high-quality dolls house kits, available in a
range of very attractive classic English designs. |
