by night - two globes in one! the perfect bedroom accessory
for children who wish to learn about the secrets of the
night sky in a very intersting way. By night the illuminated
star map shows all the major constellations, enabling you
to navigate the night sky. A light sensor automatically

Earth & Constellation Globe
This beautifully crafted globe has
a light sensor mounted on the the elegant brass stand
allowing automatic internal illumination, transforming
the globe from a detailed geographical globe into a map
of the stars and constellations.
Summary:
- Detailed geographical globe.
- Sphere diameter 22.8cm.
- All major constellations mapped for you.
- Elegant stand.
- Light sensor mounted on base.
- Detailed map of stars and constellations.
Ages:6+
What's new?
The globe size has increased – the previous version was
21cm diameter. The new globe is 22.8cm. It might not sound
a lit but it does make a big difference when you sit them
side by side. Also the globe base and stand is now in
a cool silver style. In the night-time view, significant
improvements have been made, so that the words are much
clearer; the words and constellations really punch out.
An on/off button helps to preserve battery life and give
more flexibility. So if the button is in the “on” position
when the ambient light reduces to a certain level, the
night-time view will automatically switch on via the light
sensor. If you want to switch off the night-time view
in a dark room, then they can by pressing the button to
the “off” position – this then overrides the light sensor.

Star Constellations: Our modern constellation system
comes to us from the ancient Greeks. The oldest description
of the constellations as we know them comes from a poem,
called Phaenomena, written about 270 B.C. by the Greek poet
Aratus. However, it is clear from the poem that the constellations
mentioned originated long before Aratus' time. Astronomers
officially recognize 88 constellations covering the entire
sky in the northern and southern hemispheres. Currently,
14 men and women, 9 birds, two insects, 19 land animals,
10 water creatures, two centaurs, one head of hair, a serpent,
a dragon, a flying horse, a river and 29 inanimate objects
are represented in the night sky (the total comes to more
than 88 because some constellations include more than one
creature).
Choosing a Telescope: A telescopes goes very well
alongside our Star Theatre 2 home planetarium, enabling
you to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in a very
practical way, enhancing the learning experience. There
are two main categories of telescope: Refractors and Reflectors.
Refractors, use two or more lenses to collect and focus
the light from an object to the eye of the observer, and
can trace their design back to the telescopes of Galileo’s
era. Reflectors, developed by Isaac Newton in the 17th century,
use mirrors to focus the light. As magnifications increase,
impurities in the glass of lenses can cause distortion (commonly
a “rainbow-like” halo around objects) requiring expensive
and difficult treatments and coatings to correct. Reflectors
telescopes avoid this problem, and are generally cheaper
to manufacture for a given sized aperture (the main lens
or mirror used to catch the incoming light). As a result,
most high-performance optical telescopes, including the
Hubble Space Telescope, are reflector designs. >>
