Doncaster Rovers 1961-62
Football Art on Canvas
In post war Britain , from Headingly
to Highbury, from the Arms Park to Ayresome Park, fans
amassed on packed terracing, swaying as one, open to the
elements, as the glorious drama of sport unfolded before
them. Although the memories of those fixtures may have
faded, the programmes on sale that day remain, and have
become a pivotal part of of british Social and sporting
history. Many of the covers are colourful, evocative,
and beautifully illustrated, making them works of art
in their own right.
Two Sizes: We offer two sizes of Doncaster Rovers
painting: Large A1 format (594mm wide x 841mm high), and
A2 format (420mm wide x 594mm high).
Mounted or Rolled?: Most customers buy our ready-mounted
Doncaster Rovers version. This superbly-packaged product
will arrive by courrier in perfect condition, and all
you will need to do is unwrap it and mount it on the wall
(wall mounting options and instructions are described).
Another advantage of our ready-mounted picture is that
we use a very high quality mount. Our mount consists of
6mm Wooden MDF board, fixed to a wooden 32mm cross-section
wooden frame. The canvas lies therefore on a very strong,
solid surface, making the picture much more robust than
one mounted on a cheaper open lattice frame (which tends
to sag over time, and is susceptible to tearing). Also,
the picture itself then stands about 40mm proud of the
wall on which it is hung, making a very attractive display.
We also offer the canvas "Rolled" without a mounting.
The main reason for offering this is that the picture
can be rolled safely inside a tube and then transported
much more efficiently to customers overseas (however some
Doncaster Rovers supporters also request just the canvas).
If you do just order the canvas, you will need to take
it to a local framer, who can mount it for you. Instructions
for the framer are included with each rolled canvas.

Giclee Reproduction Process: A giclee (zhee-CLAY)
is an individually-produced, high-resolution, high-fidelity
reproduction done on a special large format printer. Giclees
are produced from digital scans of existing artwork, creating
a whole new vibrant medium for art. Giclees are particularly
suited to canvas and are superior to traditional lithography
in several ways. The colors are brighter, last longer, and
are so high-resolution that they are virtually continuous
tone, rather than tiny dots. The range, or "gamut" of color
for giclees is far beyond that of lithography, and details
are crisper. Giclees use inkjet technology, but far more
sophisticated than your desktop printer. The process employs
six colors--light cyan, cyan, light magenta, magenta, yellow
and black--of lightfast, pigmented inks and finer, more
numerous, and replaceable printheads resulting in a wider
color gamut, and the ability to use various media to print
on. The ink is sprayed onto the page, actually mixing the
color on the page to create true shades and hues.
Football Match Programmes: Match programmes have
been produced for pretty much every football game ever played
- including friendlies. Thus, the programme for the friendly
match played between Everton and Glasgow Celtic at Anfield
on April 5 1890 recently sold for £2,000 at auction. Incredibly,
the programme from Everton's 1889 friendly with Newton Heath
at Anfield is valued at £10,000+. The reason? Well, shortly
afterwards Newton Heath changed their name to Manchester
United and the rest is soccer history. Even programmes for
Manchester United's F.A. Cup Final appearances in the late
50s are today valued at £40 - more than double what they
have been making in recent years. Football programmes normally
include photographs, advertisements, editorial comment and
plenty of statistical information and make a nice souvenir
of a great day out. Some football enthusiasts focus on collecting
the programmes of a particular team - both home and away
matches - or cup competition - F.A. Cup or European cup
finals. Serious collectors of football programmes usually
avoid the habit of writing the match result or goalscorers
on the printed team sheet - this practice can devalue programmes
substantially. Early programmes tend to be the scarcest
and worth the most money. Unsurprisingly, Manchester United
are easily the most collected team nowadays - with armchair
fans from Torquay to Tokyo. Another collected team are the
London giants, Arsenal. A programme for Arsenal's away fixture
at Aston Villa in the 1907/08 season retails at around £250.
New programmes can usually be bought on subscription from
the clubs themselves. |
